Naomi Schupper
Naomi Schupper has a Dutch father, a German mother and was born in Chile. She lived in Israel and studied in London. For years, she was a fashion designer. That time is still a major influence on her work. Naomi reuses many materials in her art, such as textiles and jewellery, which she wants to become one. Born Again is an example of this. The work depicts a woman feeding the trees with the help of birds to create new life.
For Naomi herself, working in the Outsider Art studio is also a rebirth. ‘Here, a new world has opened up for me in which I am learning a lot. That gives me strength. Through art you see the differences in people and that not everyone looks at something the same.’ Before Naomi joined Outsider Art, she worked at home. ‘I made photo collages and experimented with other techniques. When a friend saw my work, he sent me to Outsider Art. I was able to start working in their studio right away. For Naomi, Awaking is her most important work. ‘This collage is a representation of what was happening in my life at the time and was decisive for what was to follow. I used to be messy and tried a lot. Since Awaking, I know how I want to work.’
Naomi searches for herself in her art, her thoughts are the guide. ‘I am curious about my personal development as a woman and how other women deal with their identity, fears, physical awareness, femininity and contemporary culture.’ When Naomi starts an artwork, she doesn’t know where she ends up. ‘I collect material, find the right place in the work and make sure everything becomes a whole. People are like that too. We are a collection of experiences and events.’ For Naomi, her work is never finished. ‘At some point I have to stop and stop looking at it, otherwise I will keep working on it. I also keep seeing things now that I still want to change.’
