Norbert de Jong is self-taught. He has been painting since the 1990s. His work is expressive and figurative and difficult to pigeonhole. His paintings feature all kinds of creatures, communicating with each other. Sometimes they seem to be dancing, sometimes fighting, sometimes you don’t know exactly what they are doing. But that something is going on is certain. That is why his work represents a very special dream world.



Norbert is an extreme emotionalist, who lets his paintings speak on his behalf. Everyday reality is often at odds with his own perception, and his work depicts this unusual world of experience. From his imagination and wonder about the world, he tries to capture the world. A recurring theme is man’s struggle to find his own place. Although this is traditionally a ‘heavy and serious’ theme, he does not pass judgement. Instead, in most paintings he manages to maintain a benevolent lightness.



Norbert does not work from a preconceived concept, but intuitively. With Norbert, painting on all fronts is: inventing. His work is constantly evolving and his quest is far from over. The effervescent paintings and drawings confirm this. They make one curious about what follows.
