Sylvester Mentink has been working at the Outsider Art Atelier since January 2024. He has been making drawings since the early 1990s, originally for himself and only admired by his family. Since joining the studio, he has increasingly dared to step outside his comfort zone.He almost always works with marker, mainly creating non-figurative pieces. Typically, he completes one artwork in a single day. Alongside his powerful black-and-white abstract drawings with clean, sharp lines, he occasionally explores recognizable subjects such as cats, musical instruments, or cars. Only sporadically does he allow colour into his drawings.

His work contains many elements of graffiti and radiates energy, control, and playfulness. There is a lot to discover. So take your time and get lost in his drawings. More and more, Sylvester is switching from marker to paintbrush, creating large-scale paintings using his own distinctive colour palette. It is also good to know that Sylvester enjoys working on commissions. For example, he designed the rotating trophy for Cordaan’s best volunteer initiative, known as the “Purple Cow”. In 2025, his work was also featured across Amsterdam on the poster for Who Makes the Rules? a theatre production by Frascati and Theater LeBelle.
